The Day the World Stood Still
Friday November 22, 1963
When the phone rang, my French teacher was writing his message on the blackboard. "C'est une journée merveilleuse pour commencer à apprendre la syntaxe de la langue..." He answered the phone and turned to face the class with a somber look on his face and said, "Class is dismissed. Everyone must return to their homes." He wouldn't tell us what had happened, so we quickly left the school confused and anxious and assuming the Russians had fired a missile at us. Afterall, we had a nuclear power plant on the outskirts of town. My mother was at work. I turned on the television and heard Walter Cronkite's message: "President Kennedy died at 1:00 p.m.." The Stock Market was closed. All events for the weekend were cancelled. We were a nation in shock. We were a nation in mourning.
